| 48hr Games Design Lock In Comp - Last chance to enter!
Posted on Wed, 01 Oct 2008 by Grisley_Bear QUOTE The IGDA (International Game Developers Association) and GameOn have come together once again this year to run the 48hr game making challenge set in Brisbane. You and your team (max. 6) are only allowed 48 hours to make a working prototype of a game using keywords provided on the starting day. The competition is running from the 3rd - 5th Oct so this is your last chance to get a team together. Webcam entries are available so if you live interstate don't give up hope! I shall be there with my team as well and would love to see some more people enter. But if you can't make it this time, we have set up a new forum for you to join other games designers, animators and coders. Chat about what you are working on, find more info on events like this OR even get feedback on something you have done. Below is the list of the details for the Brisbane 48hr challenge. QUOTE Dates: Friday 3rd Oct to Sunday 5th Oct Venue: the Glasshouse, CIP Kelvin Grove Set-up: Friday Oct 3 - from 2.00pm Challenge starts: Friday Oct 3 @ 4.00pm with three keywords Challenge ends: Sunday Oct 5 @ 4.00pm Sausage sizzle: Sunday Oct 5 from 4.00pm - 5.30pm Winner announced: Sunday Oct 5 @ 5.45 pm One of the most exciting parts about the competition is that the judges are people working within the industry. John Passfield (Snr Game Designer, Pandemic) and Gordon Moyes (Exec Producer, Krome Studios) have been confirmed to judge the competition. It will be a huge honour to have them see and play a game from up and coming designers, let alone the amount of experience all the participants will receive. There will also be the guys from the 3 Blokes Studio hanging around to help out teams and have a bit of fun as well. QUOTE Competition Rules: * all entered games must be made within the 48 hour period * all entered games must exploit the three keywords given out at the start of the challenge * games can be made in anything as long as there is NO ABSOLUTE LICENSE (ie no mods that require another game to run) * team members are allowed one exit pass at a time (with a 0.5 extra in case someone needs to dash out for food or a shower of course) * games and assets must be entrant's own original work * judges decision is final * winner will be announced after the sausage sizzle on Sunday * entries remain entrants property but gameOn reserves the right use to entries for publicity f you can't make the competition, but still live in Brisbane and have an interest in this sort of thing. Pandemic Studios Lead Designer Morgan Jaffit will be holding a tips for games designers talk on Wednesday 1st Oct to get people ready and thinking for the competition or just to learn more about the industry. For more infomation on the competition head on over to either IGDA Brisbane 48hr challenge, 2008 team info and 2007 winners or alternatively we have some info in the new forum section. But act quickly as time is running out! From Games on net |

| eGames Expo Coming To Melbourne
Posted on Tue, 26 Aug 2008 by Grisley_Bear ![]() AusGamers has just been sent word the eGames Expo will be hitting Melbourne once again this November alongside the Digital Lifestyle Show. This will all be part of the International Digital Entertainment Festival or iDEF. "According to a report by consumer analysts GFK, Australian consumers spent over $5 billion on digital devices in 2007, with sales expecting to top over $6 billion in 2008. The fact that over $1.3 billion was generated in the games industry alone last year, means that the digital entertainment industry is continuing to boom... in a big way," commented Peter Barlow, Festival Founder and Director. Hopefully this year's event will be a bit more up-to-date (last year some 'previews' were still running from E3 software), but it's awesome to know Australia is beginning to take gaming seriously. The event will run at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre from November 14 to 16 From Ausgamers news |

| Optus Downtime
Posted on Tue, 15 Jul 2008 by demon ![]() A MAJOR telecommunications fault has shut down mobile and landline phone calls and internet connections in Queensland and some parts of New South Wales. Optus today blamed a broken fibre optic cable on the Gold Coast for the widespread outages and said mobile phone services and all calls to and from fixed line numbers were affected. The fault has also disrupted internet access to servers outside Queensland from within the state. "At approximately 8.00am (AEST) this morning, a fibre optic cable was broken on the Gold Coast which affected services in Queensland," an Optus spokesperson said. Problems have also been reported by customers in northern New South Wales and users on the 3 mobile network. "Technicians are on site and repair options are currently being assessed. Services are expected to be restored by midday," the spokesperson said. "We apologise for the inconvenience this has caused our customers." The cause of the cable break is not yet known. A spokesperson for Telstra said the problem was confined to the Optus network. "It is 100 per cent an Optus issue," the spokesperson told AAP. "They own the hardware and cable." |
